It's normal in our time, 2016, to expect literature and movies to offer us toned-down versions of fairy tales and myths, but this book was written back in mid 90s, when everything was as flashy as possible and over exaggerated. Mr. Cornwell was way ahead of his time.I'm re-reading this book and its 2 sequels every other winter for many years now. It's a story so beautifully written that allows me to do that with ease. This time when I started reading it to someone, who's a fan of Game of Thrones fan, and it made me realize that the story is much simpler than the G.O.T. books but it also made me remember what a proper writer reads like. No disrespect to G.R.R.Martin but Bernard Cornwell applies techniques that can turn a simple situation into a beutiful narrative. There are descriptions of places that allow me to visualize the landscape, and he is a master on setting the pace of a given situation. And all of these I felt last night when reading just the first 2 chapters and after my 10th re-reading that I felt compelled to share this review. Specifically it's masterful how he describes the birth of the young prince. He breaks off to give us details on the characters or history of them, but then he keeps repeating the noise and clatter the people made and the situation. He has a way to write in simple terms to make us identify with the intelligence of the narrator.Having read the whole trilogy, I can say that for me it is one of the best planned structures. It follows the narrator's life perfectly, from adolescence, to maturity, to aging in exactly 3 books representing each stage. In short, you won't find over-complicated characters here, and mind-bogging plot twists. The author won't try to keep you with "tricks" like that. It's just a beautiful narrative that takes me back in time.
This was never meant to be an historical account. It took me into a very credible version of Dark Ages Britain. The scenes were vivid and the various challenges to the caricatural courtly love depictions of Arthurian romances are convincing and refreshing.I believed it, and read with great pleasure.I will certainly continue.
Schade!
The perfect companion for all military history enthusiasts is the ROMA VICTRIX WINE BEAKERRoma Victrix Wein Becher"The Winter King" is the first book of the "Warlord Chronicles" which represents Mr. Cornwell's attempt to portray Arthur as a real flesh-and-blood person rather than as a mythical figure. Of course, that's been attempted many times before (and in a variety of mediums) but I doubt that anyone has been more successful in breathing life into Arthur and the supporting cast of his legend. Of course, much of the book is fictionalised in the sense that it often departs from the legend but that's fair enough: the legend itself is fiction (although that isn't to say it can't have a historical basis).Much of the story is told (in hindsight) through the eyes of Derfel,an orphan who was adopted by the wizard Merlin and who grows up to become a great warrior in the service of Arthur. This device personalises the story and gives it an immediacy which makes it seem that much more real. Adding to that illusion is the wealth of period detail which is a hallmark of Mr. Cornwell's works.I'm not going to say much about the plot other than it roughly parallels the legend (although it adds plenty of embellishments and twists). Overall, I found this trilogy to be a rich and satisfying read. Yes, it was written by a purveyor of mass-market fiction, but it's still a serious work.
I've read a good many stories about Arthur, Merlin, & co. and have to say that this book was refreshingly different and offers a new angle to an "old" story. The story is told by Derfel, who was once one of Arthur's warriors and offers the reader a very brutal, but realistic look at life during the dark ages.I found the details of the pagan rituals/beliefs very fascinating. What I didn't like quite as much were the long, detailed battle scenes, which are well written, but not really my cup of tea.All-in-all a very enjoyable and easy read - I look forward to reading the next two books.
