Als er 1914 aufbricht, hätten wir ihn aus heutiger Sicht als gescheiterte Existenz betrachtet. Alles was Shackleton bisher begonnen hat, ist mehr oder minder misslungen. Mit einer wohlhabenden Frau verheiratet, ist er selbst mittellos, aber steckt voller Geschäftsideen, zu denen unter anderem die Teilnahme und die Organisation von Reisen in die Antarktis zählen. Aber selbst dort ist er nur Zweiter, seinem Traum, den Südpol zu erreichen, kommt Amundsen zuvor.1914 unternimmt er deshalb den waghalsigen Versuch, den antarktischen Kontinent zu durchqueren und startet die Endurance-Expedition. Von dieser handelt das vorliegende Buch.Bereits in den 50er Jahren veröffentlicht, hatte Lansing noch die Möglichkeit mit Zeitzeugen und Expeditionsteilnehmern zu sprechen. Den Rest seiner Informationen hat der Autor den zahlreichen Tagebüchern von Teilnehmern der Expedition entnommen.Wir erfahren bis ins kleinste Detail und durchsetzt mit sehr persönlichen Schilderungen den Ablauf der Expedition von der Organisation über die Zerstörung der Endurance im Packeis bis hin zur dramatischen Rettung. Das Buch befasst sich nicht mit dem Schicksal des zweiten Teils der Expedition, der Ross Sea Party, die den Kontinent von der gegenüberliegenden Seite in Angriff nehmen und Lebensmitteldepots anlegen sollte.Auch diese scheitert, hier kostet schlechte Organisation und unfähige Führung allerdings mehrere Männer das Leben.Obwohl Lansing sich persönlicher Urteile über Shackleton enthält, gewinnt der Leser das Bild eines überehrgeizigen, aber letztendlich unfähigen Menschen, der des persönlichen Erfolgs willen das Leben vieler völlig skrupellos aufs Spiel setzt. Von Anfang an ist die gesamte Expedition überstürzt vorbereitet, schlecht geplant und leidet unter der autoritären aber unfähigen Führungsarbeit Shackletons. Das geht bis hin zum - heute würde man sagen "Mobbing" - einzelner Teilnehmer, bis hin zum Ausschluss von der Verleihung von Auszeichnungen.Nichtsdestoweniger muss man als Leser vom Optimismus und dem unglaublichen Durchhaltewillen der Expeditionsteilnehmer überwältigt sein. Was diese Männer ausgehalten haben, ist unglaublich und würde manch anderen in den Wahnsinn oder gar den Tod getrieben haben.Was bleibt ist eine tolle, wenn auch etwas konservativ verfasste, dokumentarische Erzählung, ein wichtiges Zeitdokument und natürlich ein kurzweiliges und spannendes Lese-Erlebnis.
Dieses Buch muss den Vergleich mit "Into Thin Air" nicht scheuen. In manchen Aspekten halte ich "Endurance ..." sogar für besser. Wie dem auch sei, eines der fünf besten Bücher, die ich in meinem Leben gelesen habe - und ich habe viele Bücher gelesen.
Man muß das Buch gelesen haben um zu wissen, welchen Strapazen die Männer von Shackleton ausgesetzt waren. Natürlich kaufte ich auch die DVD Shackleton. Bewundernswert, wie es dieser Mann schaffte, die Einheit zu erhalten bei all dem wozu die Männer ausgesetzt waren.
Sehr spannend geschrieben. Ein Abenteuer das unter die Haut geht. Wir kauften uns danach die DVD und sahen uns diese ebenfalls an. Top.

Extreme hights, depths, sports and whatever else. They are bringing to human body and mind to its limits.Some years ago Scott Kelly an american astronaut was on the international space for 364 days to discover what happens to a human in a year without gravity and often loneliness.In his memoirs he tells that there is one book he alwasy reads when alone in space. It is „Endurance“ by Alfred Lansing. It tells the story of an expedition of the british explorer Ernest Shackelton almost one hundred years ago to the south pole. What this men endured over the period of one and a half year is almost unbelievable. And Kelly told he never felt so alone in space like the men deep in the south.„All around us we have day after day the same unbroken whiteness...“ The author made up his story by the dairies the men of the expedition wrote of their ordeal. It is a story that lets you feel the coldness of the arctic beauty. So the best time to read it is in summer when temperatures are soaring.The goal of the mission was to walk from one end of the antarctic to the other but soon things really went wrong. „I have never seen such depression of spirits as there is in the tent today.“ Their ship „Endurance“ was beset by ice and they could could only drift with the ice. „But we are in the Hands of a higher power...these colossal forces of nature.“ Time moved slowly forward and the hope went down.Sitting in a comfortable chair in my living room and reading how the men founght with all their power agains the ice was sometimes unbelievable and other times i just wished the best for the men. Later in the story Shackelton, who is described as a man who is determined to bring all his men back home sailed with some men and a small boat about 650 nautical miles, what makes an unbelievable journey of about 750 miles across a wild and dangerous sea to South Georgia. Only the find another obstacle to cross.„..here was the moment they have dreamed of...but the reality was vastly different...“
This is a non-fiction book about the voyage of Ernest Shackleton in 1914. He traveled to Antartica with 27 men with a plan to cross the continent on foot. After going through 1000 miles of packed ice, the Endurance got stuck in a patch of ice and could not get free. Eventually, the ship sunk and the men were stranded. The floated on ice for over 850 miles in a harrowing journey to be rescued. This journey took 5 months and they survived by eating their sled dogs, and various seals and penguins that came upon their drift. The entire group survived.This was a pretty good book. I cannot believe this entire group of men survived these 5 months in the freezing cold off of the coldest continent in the world. They had very little shelter and very little food. They spent most of those 5 months wet and cold. Every minute must have been torture, but they stayed level headed and survived,Try this book. It is amazing what lengths people will go to for survival.
